THE SHORT ANSWER

How do you monitor chlorine before a reverse-osmosis system?

Define the membrane supplier’s feed-water requirements and the residual species in the source water. Evaluate monitoring before treatment to understand the incoming load and after treatment to assess breakthrough. The post-treatment method must resolve the concentration at which the site needs to act.

Choose the point that answers your operating question.

  1. EVALUATION POINT 1Incoming supply

    Understand the incoming conditions.

  2. EVALUATION POINT 2Carbon / dechlorination

Evaluate the treatment or process change.

  3. EVALUATION POINT 3RO feed measurement

    Define verification and operator response.

Conceptual monitoring sequence. Final placement, detection limits and control actions must be reviewed for your water and equipment.

01 / APPLICATION PLANNING

Measure the right side of treatment

An upstream reading helps characterize what enters the treatment stage. It cannot establish what leaves that stage. Identify an accessible downstream point that represents the RO feed and allows paired reference sampling. Account for the physical distance and delay between that point and the membrane system.

02 / APPLICATION PLANNING

Specify low-level performance

Ask for measurement uncertainty, detection capability and response behavior near the intended action threshold. A broad measuring range or a small displayed increment is not sufficient evidence. Confirm the method in the actual feed water and include the residual species that matters to the application.

03 / APPLICATION PLANNING

Agree on the breakthrough response

Define who investigates a rising reading, what reference confirmation is needed and how the plant operates when a measurement is invalid. If automatic diversion or shutdown is proposed, commission the complete controls path. A monitor by itself does not guarantee protection of an RO membrane.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

Clear answers before you choose.

Does a zero reading prove there is no chlorine?

No. Interpret the reading against the method’s detection capability and uncertainty. Confirm that capability is adequate for the operating decision.

Should we measure before or after activated carbon?

The two points answer different questions: upstream loading and downstream treatment outcome. Choose based on the decision needed at each point.

Is free chlorine monitoring enough for chloraminated water?

Do not assume so. Establish the source disinfectant and select a measurement that addresses the relevant residual species.
