The combination that matters
Ammonia-oxidizing organisms consume free ammonia and produce nitrite, which then exerts chlorine demand. Online, that chemistry appears as a trend across several MP-TOTAL channels at once:
- Monochloramine starts to fall while total chlorine still looks acceptable
- Total chlorine follows later — a lagging confirmation, not the first alarm
- Free chlorine staying near zero is expected in a well-run chloraminated system; a sudden free-chlorine appearance can mean breakpoint or overfeed, not “healthy free residual”
- pH often shifts as nitrification proceeds
- Temperature rise (warm tanks, summer) increases biological rate
- Conductivity can move with blending, detention, or source changes that coincide with residual loss

Can total chlorine alone give early warning?
Usually not. Total chlorine often holds until late. The useful warning is monochloramine declining relative to total, plus the supporting pH / temperature / conductivity trend at that site.
