FOR WATER TREATERS & SERVICE PROVIDERS

Legionella monitoring for water treatment providers.

Build continuous residual monitoring into your building-water service. Combine direct chlorine measurement, verification and customer reporting with a service scope your technicians can deliver.

THE PRACTICAL ANSWER

A monitoring service needs more than a sensor: select the disinfectant measurement, validate the installation, configure reliable data collection, assign alarm response and agree the reporting scope. Start with one client site and measure the service effort before expanding.

Cold water: specify the residual before the hardware.

Confirm whether the supply uses free chlorine or chloramine and what result the customer needs to report. MP5 is a starting point for free chlorine; evaluate MP-Total for the selected total-chlorine or monochloramine channel. A total-chlorine result should not be labeled as a direct monochloramine result.

Compare incoming water with representative downstream locations and any on-site treatment outlet. Record pH, temperature and installation conditions alongside verification samples. Investigate residual loss in context rather than assuming every change has the same cause.

Hot water: review normal service and excursions.

MP-HOT has a published operating range of 1–60°C. Confirm the actual return temperature and any higher-temperature operating cycle before selecting a location. A product’s temperature rating is an equipment limit, not a recommendation to reduce a building’s water-management setpoint.

Direct in-pipe measurement removes the external sample-cooling path in a compatible installation. Plan safe access, isolation, commissioning and reference sampling with the facility team. Reagent-free operation and automatic cleaning reduce specific maintenance tasks; they do not remove the need for verification and service.

Connect measurements to the workflow you already support.

Choose D20 where a local controller fits the project, or connect the sensor through a Smart Box to a compatible OEM controller using Modbus RTU. Confirm power, wiring, register definitions, units, polling and status handling during integration.

A BT-SB configuration may provide local data access; remote retrieval requires the appropriate communications path. Specify the ordered hardware and the reporting system before promising remote access. Include time synchronization, data gaps, communication-loss alarms and a procedure for invalid readings in commissioning.

Package a service the customer can understand.

Define the deliverable as a monitored set of locations with an agreed review and response schedule. A useful customer report connects a trend to an event, a check and a documented action. This makes your technical work visible beyond the visit report.

Price the full service: commissioning, review time, reference checks, wear parts, planned visits, connectivity and exceptions. Remote review may reduce some diagnostic travel; mandatory site work and verification remain. Do not promise fewer visits before a pilot establishes the actual workload.

  • Pilot baseline: technician hours, travel and existing sampling tasks.
  • Pilot workload: installation, configuration, review, verification and alarm handling.
  • Monthly service contribution: customer service revenue minus labor, travel, connectivity and service materials.
  • Scale decision: expand when measurement performance and response ownership are demonstrated.

Compare instruments by the work they require.

For a reagent-based DPD analyzer, include reagent logistics, sample plumbing, waste handling and the model-specific service schedule. For a membrane-based sensor, include the manufacturer’s flow, pressure, membrane, electrolyte and calibration requirements. Do not assume all instruments in a category have the same accuracy or maintenance interval.

For Halogen, assess reagent-free amperometric measurement, automatic cleaning, available mounting and the selected sensor’s published limits. Confirm performance against an appropriate reference method in the client’s actual water.

Start with one client and a defined acceptance plan.

Bring the water chemistry, temperature range, proposed points, controller model and reporting requirements to a pilot discussion. Agree the commissioning checks, acceptable measurement performance and responsibility for responding to alarms.

Discuss training, technical support and commercial arrangements with Halogen for your project. Partner pricing, margins, co-branding and third-party software integration should be confirmed in writing rather than assumed from a general product page.

Common questions

Can we use our own controller and reports?

Yes, evaluate the Smart Box and Modbus RTU integration for the selected sensor and controller. Your integration must implement measurement mapping, sensor status, alarms and reporting.

Does monitoring remove the need for technician visits?

No. It can support remote review when connectivity is configured, but verification, maintenance and the site’s required activities still need a defined service plan.

Can we offer monitoring as an ongoing service?

You can develop a service around installation, trend review, agreed alarm response and maintenance. Confirm technical scope and commercial terms with Halogen before offering specific partner benefits.
