Reagentless Hach CL17 Alternatives: CLF10sc vs In-Pipe Sensors
A reagentless alternative to a Hach CL17 can be a membrane amperometric panel such as the CLF10sc or a bare-electrode in-pipe sensor such as the Halogen MP5 family. Both avoid DPD reagent dosing. Eliminating a sample drain is a separate installation decision: direct in-pipe measurement can avoid a dedicated discarded sample stream, while a reagentless panel still needs a sample supply and an outlet arrangement.
First identify the analyzer and chlorine species
Record whether the existing instrument is an original CL17 or a CL17sc, and whether it measures free or total chlorine. These are different models with different sample-flow behavior. Do not apply one model’s flow specification or annual water estimate to the other.
The CLF10sc and Halogen free-chlorine sensors address free chlorine. A chloraminated system needs a separate review of total chlorine and monochloramine requirements. MP5 is an earlier-generation Halogen name; for new free-chlorine projects, review the current MP-5F configuration and its own specifications rather than carrying forward historical MP5 claims.
CLF10sc: reagentless measurement on a sample panel
Hach offers the CLF10sc as a membrane amperometric free-chlorine analyzer. Its documentation lists a sample flow of 30–50 L/h, with 40 L/h optimal, and configurations with a separate pH sensor. Hach also lists replacement membranes and free-chlorine electrolyte. Removing DPD bottles does not remove these service items.
This approach merits evaluation where a suitable panel, sample supply and outlet already exist. Confirm the exact configuration, pressure limits and service instructions with Hach. Sample flow is not automatically water waste: inspect where the outlet and any bypass actually go before calculating savings.
Halogen: evaluate direct in-pipe measurement
Halogen’s bare-electrode design uses mechanical cleaning and local water movement at the electrode, avoiding a chlorine-sensing membrane and DPD dosing. A suitable direct in-pipe installation can remove the need to continuously discard a sample stream. It still requires power, inspection, reference checks and model-specific wear-part service.
Zero bulk flow means the sensor can measure the water at its location while its internal mechanism maintains local movement. It does not mean a stagnant tank is fully mixed, a remote sample line is fresh, or the instrument works without power. Select a representative measurement point and verify performance during low-flow conditions.
For drinking-water contact, verify the NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listing and use conditions for the exact wetted assembly. This standard addresses material health effects; it does not certify measurement accuracy or establish that a monitoring program meets its reporting requirements.
When keeping DPD is the better decision
Keep the existing DPD workflow when the applicable monitoring requirements call for it or when the proposed replacement cannot meet the site’s chemistry, range, installation or service needs. Reagentless measurement does not make DPD reference testing obsolete.
EPA Method 334.0 covers online residual chlorine measurement paired with an approved grab-sample reference method. Its stated scope is 0.2–4 mg/L. Review the full method and applicable monitoring requirements before changing a reporting instrument; installing a sensor alone does not establish compliance.
Run a side-by-side pilot before replacing a fleet
Agree on the chlorine species, operating range and acceptance criteria before starting. Compare readings to a suitable reference from the same water and time; document sample transport delay, pH, temperature, flow changes, fouling, service work and downtime. Include the difficult conditions that motivated the replacement.
Measure total drain and bypass discharge over complete operating cycles. Annualize the measured average using actual operating hours. Compare reagents, membranes or wear parts, labor, reference testing, power, water and installation cost. A parts kit is not an all-inclusive annual operating cost, and a utility case study is not a guaranteed result at another site.
