Chlorine Sensor Outputs: 4–20 mA, Modbus & IoT

Select the chlorine measurement first, then confirm the interface supported by the exact sensor and controller. A 4–20 mA signal carries a scaled measurement; Modbus RTU exchanges digital registers over a compatible serial connection. An IoT gateway adds telemetry but does not change the sensor’s analytical capabilities.

What to specify for a chlorine sensor module with 4–20 mA

Confirm whether the analog output is on the probe or a separate controller or interface. Specify the concentration represented by 4 mA and 20 mA, loop supply, isolation, load limits and how faults or service mode are signaled.

A 0–2 ppm output scale must be supported by the measurement range and application accuracy. Verify scaling end-to-end at the PLC or recorder, including out-of-range and missing-signal behavior.

What to specify for Modbus RTU

Use the register map for the precise model and firmware. Confirm serial settings, address, wiring, termination, units, data type, byte order and status registers. RS-485 describes an electrical interface; it does not by itself define the register meaning.

Document how the receiving system handles stale data, sensor service, invalid readings and loss of communication. Check those conditions during commissioning as well as normal readings.

Can a chlorine sensor connect to Arduino or Raspberry Pi?

An industrial sensor is not generally a direct GPIO device. A supported 4–20 mA interface requires suitable current-loop acquisition hardware; a supported serial interface requires compatible communications hardware and software. Verify electrical isolation, supply and the manufacturer’s interface documentation.

For an exploratory project, begin with documented protocol support. For installed treatment monitoring, use a suitably engineered controller and qualified installation. This guide is not a claim that Halogen supplies an Arduino module or a plug-and-play Raspberry Pi driver.

Smart chlorine monitoring at remote booster stations

Evaluate power budget, coverage, upload interval, local buffering, time synchronization, alarm delivery and maintenance access. Separate the sensor’s measurement interval from the gateway’s reporting interval so operators understand the age of each reading.

Halogen offers connectivity options for remote monitoring. Match the gateway to the sensor generation and required outputs, and confirm configuration with the supplier.

Gas-phase versus liquid-phase chlorine detection

A water chlorine analyzer measures dissolved residual in a liquid. A gas detector measures airborne chlorine for a different application. They are not interchangeable, even if both displays use ppm. Specify the sample medium and purpose before selecting hardware.
