Industry Applications for Halogen Amperometric Chlorine Sensors

Halogen Systems produces amperometric chlorine sensors that are useful in a variety of industries and applications. Our primary areas of focus (and some that we’re working on) are below.

Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS) Chlorine Sensors

The Halogen TRO line of sensors is available in both Direct Pipe Insertion or Side Stream installation types. Halogen TROs offer many benefits such as:

  • Lower installation & maintenance costs
  • Flow Independent
  • Fast response
  • Reliable performance
  • Long intervals between calibrations
  • Operates from -2°C to 35°C
  • Hot Tap Installation
  • Hot Tap Valve allows removal without draining ballast pipe
  • No discharge of reagents or a waste stream
  • Self-Cleaning

Drinking-water distribution systems present unique challenges for residual chlorine sensors. The MP5 is unique among chlorine analyzers because it is the only Chlorine Sensor approved for NSF-61 installations. This means it can be installed directly in a drinking water pipe with no required waste stream, making it a great choice for remote tanks, distribution hubs, and end-of-line sampling applications. Plus, it takes the water wasted for testing to zero. Other benefits of the Halogen MP5™ Chlorine Sensor are:

  • NSF-61 Certified (No Waste Stream)
  • No Membranes or Reagents
  • Long-term unattended operation
  • Operation and accuracy at varying flow rates
  • Low cost of operation
  • Compatible with SCADA systems
  • Reliable performance
  • Hot Tap or Wet Tap Installation for immersion into a pipe
  • Life-time chlorine sensor
  • Months between calibrations
  • Differential pH sensor (with 2 to 3-year life)

The Halogen  MP5™ Chlorine Analyzer measures five parameters in one integrated package. It uses proprietary technology that maintains a stable calibration for months despite complex environments like water reclamation.

We use bare electrodes, eliminating the need to replace clogged membranes or replenish electrolyte as required by conventional chlorine amperometric sensors.  Flow-independent, and unaffected by pressure, the MP5™ analyzer allows for multiple installation options: direct-pipe insertion, side-stream (for drop-in replacement of membrane & reagent sensors), mounted on a boom, or even submerged.

A wastewater version of the chlorine analyzer is in testing environments now with a mid to late 2023 general release target.

Other Industry Applications Coming Soon:

Commercial Swimming Pool and Spa Monitoring

Halogen Systems Free Chlorine sensor uses the amperometric technique (PPM) and is ideally suited for use in swimming pools. Since many operators are accustomed to using the ORP methodology, the Swimming Pool Controller displays both ORP and PPM chlorine by default. The ORP method uses a patent-pending method Rapid Response ORP™ prevents absorption of organics when high levels of cyanuric acid are present (see below).

A multiparameter chlorine sensor that measures the following parameters:

  • Free Chlorine
  • pH
  • Rapid Response ORP™
  • Conductivity
  • Temperature

No other sensor has these qualities:

  • Self-cleaning electrodes
  • Flow independent operation
  • Long-life chlorine sensor
  • Replaceable pH cartridge
  • Low maintenance
  • No reagents, electrolyte, or membranes

Commercial Cooling Towers

This application is in partner trials. Ask your rep for the current status.

Cooling towers are notoriously difficult applications for chlorine sensors and bromine sensors.
Many systems operate at high cycles of concentration due to the conductivity and hardness found in water. To slow the formation of build-up, many operators use film-forming corrosion inhibitors. The resulting organic contaminants make it difficult to read chlorine levels in the system’s water. HSI’s MP5™ chlorine sensor is ideally suited for these challenging applications. Not only can it measure both chlorine and bromine, but it is also self-cleaning. Its built-in conductivity sensor can eliminate several discrete sensors.

Domestic Hot Water Monitoring

This application is in partner trials. Ask your rep for the current status.

Hot water systems can be a hotbed for Legionella and other harmful bacteria. While these sources of infection can be easily treated by chlorine, the means of testing can be problematic and overly manual. The small footprint and flexible installation options granted by a solution based on the MP5™ amperometric chlorine analyzer can make consistent monitoring easy. The MP5™ can tolerate high temperatures and doesn’t rely on consistent flow. Plus it doesn’t add any additional chemicals to the stream.
