The Utility
The County of Maui Department of Water Supply operates one of Hawaii's largest groundwater systems — 46 deep wells, more than 750 miles of distribution main, and 145 storage facilities spread across challenging island terrain. Many sites are remote, with limited access and variable hydraulic conditions.
The Challenge
At one remote site, the existing Hach analyzers suffered chronic false alarms caused by low and variable sample pressure. Conventional sensors depend on stable flow and pressure; when those conditions drift, readings become unreliable and operators are pulled into long trips to a hard-to-reach location to chase nuisance alarms.
The Solution
In June 2024 Maui piloted the Halogen MP5, a reagent-free amperometric analyzer whose built-in circulation makes it flow- and pressure-independent. The unit started up at the remote site without calibration or flow adjustments and began reporting reliably immediately, eliminating the pressure-driven false alarms that had plagued the location.
The Results
- check_circleZero calibration required since the June 2024 installation.
- check_circleDeployed successfully at a challenging remote site with variable low pressure.
- check_circleEliminated the chronic false alarms produced by the prior analyzers.
- check_circlePilot unit converted to permanent operation.
- check_circlePlanning expansion to additional remote sites across the system.
“The MP5 is installed on a remote site with low and variable sample pressures, which had chronic alarm issues. The Halogen MP5 has continued to operate successfully.”
